International Convention proposes an approach to geosciences and their development in Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 5 (ACN) The importance of geosciences and their contributions to Cuba's development and to the fulfillment of the National Economic and Social Plan until 2030, were aspects highlighted today at the opening session of the 9th International Convention of Earth Sciences, which is being held online until next Friday.

Kenya Nuñez Cambra, president of the Cuban Society of Geology (SCG), the organizing institution of the event, said that among other topics, those related to the main problems of the country will be discussed, such as the contribution to food security, the production of materials for housing construction and sustainable management of resources.

She also said that the 384 delegates from all Cuban affiliates and 17 from eight other nations will exchange on the search for renewable energies and environmental safety, and the university and its relationship with the business sector.

Nunez Cambra, who is also a Master of Science, insisted on the need to achieve the social recognition demanded by geosciences, and mentioned the efforts for the proclamation of October 6 as International Geodiversity Day, which would provide an annual reminder of the essential role of this branch for human welfare and sustainable management of the planet.

Of geological diversity, he said that it provides the basis and habitat for living things, is a source of building materials, provides energy resources, stores waste, provides fresh water, mitigates pollution and helps to understand and predict natural hazards.
Geology provides the evidence to reconstruct the billions of years of Earth's history and the evolution of life, and geodiversity offers evidence of past climatic and landscape changes and their causes, and therefore allows us to understand and predict the impacts of future environmental changes, the expert concluded.
