Cuba redoubles measures against Covid-19 outbreak

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 6 (ACN) Given the increase in Covid-19 cases after the opening of Cuba's international airports, the Caribbean island is intensifying measures to curb the rising infection rate.

During a meeting of the temporary working group for the control of the pandemic headed by president, Miguel Diaz-Canel, it was reported that the daily press conferences of the Ministry of Public Health will be resumed in order to provide more information to the people.

It was also decided to move the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Matanzas and Villa Clara to phase three of the recovery stage, and keep Havana, Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba in that phase, while Artemisa and Mayabeque were moved to phase one.

Likewise, an alert was issued to the provinces of Las Tunas and Guantanamo due to the deterioration of their epidemiological situation, while the rest of the country's territories continue in the so-called New Normality.

By these days Cuba has reported the highest number of positive cases since the emergence of the pandemic in the country, in March 2020, and 1,738 patients remain admitted to hospital institutions, also the highest number since that date.

Faced with this scenario, Diaz-Canel called for intensifying the fight against Covid-19: 'we must do new things, because the situation is different, therefore, we must see what other actions can be done differently to find results in a faster way,' he stated.

He also instructed to work so that the decrease in international flights decided by the island's authorities allows for a more effective response in the decrease in contagion figures, and called for expediting information to travelers on the result of the PCR tests.
