HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 6 (ACN) Cuban minister of foreign trade and foreign investment, Rodrigo Malmierca Diaz, highlighted today the successes of the country's science and technology in the fight against the COVID-19, despite the US economic, commercial and financial blockade.
Cuba shows favorable results in the control of the disease, due, in good part, to the essential contribution of science and technological innovation, basic pillars of the integral program of confrontation to the pandemic and 85 % of the products of the Cuban protocol of action for the confrontation to the COVID-19 are of national production.
During the 6th ordinary period of sessions of the National Assembly of the People's Power last December, the Cuban minister of public health, Jose Angel Portal Miranda, assured that this is the result, in the first place, of the thinking of the historical leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, and of the social policies implemented during 62 years of the Revolution.
According to the report issued by the head of health, the plan for confronting the pandemic combines, in a coherent manner, three essential components: the epidemiological, the organization of health services and science.
In this sense, he referred that the containment of the pandemic in Cuba has been sustained in the differentiated and preventive attention to vulnerable groups, the surveillance in health and the access to novel medicines produced by the Cuban biotechnological and pharmaceutical industry, which guarantees sovereignty and sustainability to the approved plan.
When making a recount of the main achievements, Portal Miranda emphasized the existence of four vaccination candidates that are already in the clinical trial phase, which places Cuba as the first country in Latin America to obtain such result and, at the same time, it places it in the select group of 47 nations that work in obtaining a preventive vaccine against the virus.
