HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 3 (ACN) During the last day of the extraordinary session of the Governing Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the Cuban delegation, headed by Ana Maria Mari Machado, deputy president of the National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP by its Spanish acronym), congratulated Duarte Pacheco, the new president of the international body.
Yolanda Ferrer, chair of the international relations committee of the Cuban parliament, expressed her hope that during Pacheco's mandate, the IPU, faithful to its founding principles, will continue defending the rights of the people to freely choose their political, economic and social system with self-determination and without foreign meddling.
For his part, speaking in the virtual session, the new IPU president said that the current pandemic has shown the need to work together; to prepare for life after COVID-19, to focus on the essentials and to make decisions to foster changes that go beyond passing resolutions.
During its three-day session, the IPU Governing Council discussed and took decisions on urgent issues related to its functioning, including approval of the budget and work program of the international body for the next year; and elected its new president.
