HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 2 (ACN) Cuban parliamentarian Ana Maria Mari Machado, deputy president of the National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP by its Spanish acronym), is leading the Cuban delegation to the extraordinary session of the 206th Governing Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), to be held virtually November 1-4.
The meeting has been convened with the aim of addressing issues concerning its functioning, including the adoption of the IPU's budget and work program for 2021, and the election of its president.
During the day, MPs from Canada, Portugal, Uzbekistan and Pakistan presented their candidacies for the presidency of the organization and an electronic vote was held to elect the high office, which in the last three years was occupied by MP Gabriela Cuevas, the second woman in this exercise and the youngest among all those elected in the history of the IPU.
Cuba rejoined the IPU in 1977, after the National Assembly of the People's Power was constituted on December 2, 1976.
