Cuba in outstanding place for reporting on its contribution to fighting climate change

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 7 (ACN) Cuba ranks 13th in the list of countries that submitted this year to the UN the update of the National Determined Contribution (NDC) for the 2020-2030 period with a view to facing climate change, announced on Tuesday an expert in the matter.

Despite the tightened economic, financial and commercial blockade of the United States and the socio-economic impact of the novel coronavirus, Cuban professionals delivered the report on the national commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, explained PhD Odalys Caridad Goicochea Cardoso, head of CITMA's General Direction of Environment.
In the case of Latin America, only Jamaica and Chile accompanied it, the former director of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment added in a press conference at the headquarters of the agency.
The NDC constitutes a commitment by the international community to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, according to the terms of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Goicochea clarified.
Cuba ratified the Paris Agreement on that Convention, adopted in the French capital on December 12, 2015, although it is not a major emitter of greenhouse gases.
However, given the seriousness of the global climate problem, it is expected these contributions will be as ambitious as possible, so that member countries will commit to the highest targets their national circumstances will allow.
For her part, Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC, acknowledged last September Cuba's commitment to address climate change by updating the National Determined Contribution for the period 2020-2030, as part of the Paris Agreement, and expressed her gratitude for its efforts to expand its mitigation objectives by including the agriculture, transport and forestry sectors, as well as renewable energy and energy efficiency.
