HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 27 (ACN) The bonds of solidarity and fraternity of the Cuban-Arab community, the people and government of Cuba with the Republic of Lebanon, were shown in the political-cultural act carried out at the headquarters of the Arab Union of Cuba (UAC), in Havana, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the independence of that brother country.

As part of the Dialogue and Encounter with Arab Culture program, tribute was paid to the outstanding Lebanese poet Gibran Khalid Gibran, on whom the Arabist writer and winner of the Abdala Literature Competition, Oscar Viñas, spoke, and a documentary on the life and work of the Lebanese intellectual was presented.

Alfredo Deriche Gutiérrez, president of the UAC and the Federation of Arab Entities of America, referred to the honor and duty of the Cuban-Arab community, the majority of which is composed of descendants of Lebanese, to pay tribute to that Middle Eastern country, which has always shown solidarity and support for the struggle of the Cuban people in the international arena, and highlighted the fraternal relations existing between the two nations.

Namir Noureddine, ambassador of the Republic of Lebanon to Cuba, expressed his gratitude to the Cuban-Arab community for this act of solidarity with his country and highlighted how the ties of friendship and cooperation between the two peoples are being strengthened every day.

Among those attending the event were Héctor Igarza, director of North Africa and the Middle East at MINREX; Alina Fernández, an official of the Cuban Movement for Peace; Akram Samhar, ambassador of Palestine and dean of the Arab diplomatic corps in Cuba, as well as other diplomatic representatives.

Finally, journalist Juan Dufflar Amel, secretary general of the UAC, read an ode to Lebanon, and the dance group of the Arab Union of Cuba performed.
