Cuba Reaffirms its Commitment with Nuclear Disarmament

HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 25 (ACN) The Cuban ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Pedro Luis Pedroso reaffirmed on Wednesday the country's commitment with nuclear disarmament in addition to maintaining international peace and security.

Speaking during the second Preparatory Committee for the
Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of
Nuclear Weapons, the Cuban diplomat also expressed the will of strict compliance with the legal obligations in virtue of the pact, like the State Party of the Treaty.

According to Prensa Latina News Agency, Pedroso expressed concern for the current modernization of nuclear weapons in addition to the political manipulation based on the double standard of some nuclear powers that do not comply with legal obligations regarding non-proliferation.

He reiterated the position of Cuba's principles against the sustained military doctrines in the possession of nuclear weapons, which he characterized as unsustainable and unacceptable and called for the total elimination of such weapons.

Cuba also supports the declaration carried out by Venezuela on behalf of the Non Aligned Movement in which he defended the legitimate right of the Sates to have full access to nuclear energy for peaceful means.

The Cuban diplomat highlighted that on January 31st, 2018, Cuba became the fifth country in the world to ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, example of its historic commitment with nuclear disarmament.
