Cuba defends respect for the Charter of the United Nations

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 22 (acn) Cuba defended the respect for the Charter of the United Nations, which advocates peace and cooperation on the basis of sovereign equality of the states and non-interference in their internal affairs.

According to the Prensa Latina news agency, in a session of the Special Committee of the Charter, diplomat Tanieris Diéguez highlighted Cuba's commitment to this document and the importance of strengthening the leading role of the General Assembly as main UN body of normative, deliberation, policy adoption and representation.
The Cuban official rejected any attempt to reinterpret the principles and purposes of the Charter aimed at promoting political agendas of interventionism and interference, to the detriment of the integrity and sovereignty of developing countries.
With regard to the Special Committee, she recognized its work to strengthen the role of the organization, and insisted that it should be open to the inclusive and transparent debate of proposals with implications for the implementation of the Charter.
Cuba opposes attempts to reduce the work of the Committee and its agenda, and encourages delegations to submit substantive proposals and constructively participate in the debates, said Diéguez.
The Charter of the United Nations was signed on June 26, 1945, in San Francisco at the conclusion of the United Nations Conference on International Organization and thereafter entered into force on October 24, 1945.
In its preamble, it emphasizes that the peoples of that organization are resolved, among other things, to live together in peace as good neighbors, to join forces for the maintenance of international peace and security, to use an international mechanism to promote economic and social development of all peoples.
