HAVANA, Cuba, May 2 (acn) Celebrations of May Day, International Workers' Day, reached international proportions in Cuba on Sunday, when millions of people paraded through squares and avenues of the country.
The multi-state television channel Telesur described the day as a tour of banners, chants, cultural activities and color in the main squares of the island.
The information included, as backdrop, a giant metal sculpture in relief of Commander Ernesto Che Guevara, very close to that of his comrade in arms Commander Camilo Cienfuegos, placed on buildings adjacent to the Jose Marti Revolution Square.
Telesur mentioned the presence in the emblematic place of Army General Raul Castro, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party and President of the Councils of State and Ministers, where more than half a million people paraded.
The Spanish news agency EFE also referred to the date, while announcing that Cuba was celebrating another massive May Day, a holiday in the country.
Evgueny Makarov, deputy chairman of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Russia (FNPR), headed the delegation of his organization in May Day celebrations in Havana, according to the Russia Today television channel.
Before leaving for this capital with Nikolai Blokhin, head of International Relations of the FNPR, Makarov expressed the expectations that attending the rally alongside Cuban workers during the parade at Revolution Square caused on him.
The presence of the Russian union members in Cuba includes solidarity meetings with social organizations, and a meeting with representatives of the Confederation of Cuban workers.
On this occasion, May Day celebrations focused on supporting the agreements and resolutions of the 7th Congress of the Cuban Communist Party and on paying tribute to the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, for his 90th birthday on August 13.

In each province, images and messages reflected the prominence of each union in these parades, a patriotic tradition for Cubans.
Through videos, dozens of tweets showed the enthusiasm that reigned on the streets of the island, as well as opinions of those who paraded under the slogan For Cuba: Unity and Commitment.
That same motto was reflected by the Prensa Latina news agency referring to the main rally for the International Workers' Day, in majority support for the Revolution and the efforts to perfect socialism in the nation.
This is the first act of mass rally held after the celebration, on April 16-19, of the 7th Congress of the Cuban Communist Party, where this road was ratified, and expresses the will of the people to play a leading role in this process of change, recalled PL.
The news agency reported the fact that thousands of educators led the parade in Havana, venue to the main May Day rally in Cuba, in the context of the 55th anniversary of the Literacy Teaching Campaign and the declaration of Cuba as a territory free of illiteracy.
