Havana, March 21 (ACN) The United Nations Security Council called to increase international efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to Haiti and condemned violent attacks by local armed gangs.
In a communique, cited by PL news agency, the 15-member Security Council asked to support the Haitian police forces and insisted in the need to reestablish public order through a fast deployment of the Multinational Security Support Mission, authorized by the Council in October last year.
The Council recalled over the past weeks more than 17 thousand Haitians have been displaced from the capital Port-au-Prince due to increasing violence and expressed deep concern for the illegal traffic of weapons and munitions towards the Caribbean nation. Council members insisted that member states should enforce an embargo on weapons in tune with relevant resolutions.
The Security Council acknowledged the key role of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in supporting Haiti’s efforts to deal with the current political crisis and insecurity scenario. In this regard, the UN body reiterated its support of a political process led and controlled by the Haitian people and called on all interested parties to keep up enhancing consensus through inclusive dialog.
