Cuba thanks international support against U.S. blockade

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 27 (ACN) At a meeting with Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (HR), during the 55th Session of the Human Rights Council, Cuba’s First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Gerardo Peñalver Portal thanked the support of international organizations against the U.S. blockade and ratified the island's unwavering commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights.

Peñalver Portal also met with Tatiana Valovaya, director general of the UN Organizational Office and secretary general of the Conference on Disarmament, to whom he praised the contributions of Geneva-based organizations, agencies, funds and programs to the UN Secretary General's Report on the effects of such unilateral policy.

Likewise, the Cuban official met Tuesday with Irena Vojáĉková-Sollorano, deputy director general of the International Organization for Migration, to talk about the negative impact of the blockade on Cuba's efforts to guarantee a regular, safe and orderly migration.

“Cuba plays an active role in international debates on migration and recognizes the crucial mission of the International Organization for Migration in that respect,” he remarked.

The 55th session of the Human Rights Council began on Monday in Geneva, Switzerland, with a call to preserve human rights and peace worldwide as the fundamental guarantees are in danger.
