It’s the Right Time to Conquer Peace for Colombia and Latin America

Havana, Aug 13 (ACN) This is the right time for all of us to commit ourselves more to the possibility and real will to achieve the peace we all wish, peace for Latin America and the Caribbean.

The statement was made by Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel during a meeting Friday with Colombian government officials and members of that country’s National Liberation Army (ELN), who recently announced the resumption of peace talks to be hosted by Havana.

Diaz-Canel described as of transcendental significance to achieve peace in Colombia the fact that Gustavo Petra has taken power in that country including the peace issue as a major point on his presidential agenda, this means that peace is now closer.

He also considered as historic is meeting with those participating in the peace process and ratified Cuba’s willingness to keep serving as guarantor or host of the talks and make all possible efforts for their success.

The Cuban Head of State expressed satisfaction for having in Havana all the parties involved in the peace talks and said that this will be a difficult and long process, which must be assumed, overcome and embraced it in tune with the goals all participants pursue.”

The victory of Gustavo Petro not only opens doors to the peace process, but favors the advancement towards regional integration of the countries, and boosts bilateral relations with Cuba, after economic, cultural and education relations has strengthened.

Diaz-Canel asked Colombian Foreign Minister Alavaro Leyva, who is heading his government delegation to the talks, to take fraternal greetings to the Colombian President and an invitation to visit Cuba, and wish him success in his term of office.

Leyva on his part conveyed friendly greetings from his president and the gratitude to Cuba for its actions in favor of peace in Colombia, and he went on to express his government’s decision to reject the designation of the island as a country promoting terrorism.

The meeting was also attended by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, the representatives of the National Liberation Army, of Norway as guarantor country, of the UN Secretary General and the Catholic Church in the South American nation. The all stressed Cuba’s role, will and optimism to work for peace.
