Cuba beats Guatemala in Men´s Continental Volleyball ChampionshipHAVANA, Cuba, Sep 3 (acn) Cuba beat Guatemala (group B) in their debut at the 2019 NORCECA Men´s Continental Volleyball Championship taking place from September 2-7 at the University of Winnipeg, in Manitoba, Canada.

Cubans won 3-0 (25-13, 37-35 and 25-14), with highlight to wing spiker (WS) Osniel Melgarejo, who was the top scorer of the match with 14 points, followed by middle blocker (MB) Roamy Alonso (11), WS Marlon Yant (10), MB Javier Concepción (10) and WS Miguel Angel Lopez (9), while veteran MB Robertlandy Simon (3) only played in the first set.
Guatemala´s WS Wagner Chacon was the scoring leader of his team with 12 units, according to the official website of the tournament.
The Caribbean side has already locked up a spot in the NORCECA Olympic Qualifier next January, but they have the goal to win this contest.
Also yesterday, USA defeated 3-0 (25-14, 25-17 and 25-14) the Dominican Republic in the other game of Group B, while Mexico won also 3-0 (28-26, 25-18 and 25-22) over Puerto Rico in Pool A.
Today´s program includes the matches Guatemala-United States (B); Cuba-DR (B); and Canada- Mexico (A) with Puerto Rico (A) resting.
The 2019 NORCECA Men´s Continental Volleyball Championship is a seven-team tournament after Suriname withdrew in the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances.
The leaders of each group directly qualify to semifinals and the second and third best squads of each Pool advance to quarterfinals.
