HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 9 (acn) Cuba will face the host Peru today on the fourth day of the preliminary round for Pool A of the 18th Women's Pan American Volleyball Cup.
After losing 2-3 (25-23, 25-19, 27-29, 18-25 and 12-15) to the Dominican Republic and 0-3 (19-25, 21-25 and 22-25) to Canada, and defeating Guatemala 3-0 (25-14, 25-13 and 25-12), Cubans will try to get their second victory to then close the group stage clashing with Argentina.
Against Guatemala, the top scorer of the match was Cuban Greisy Fine, with 16 points, supported by Claudia Hernandez (14), Diaris Perez (13) and Jessica Aguilera (11), while Sarai Alvarez (10) highlighted for the losing side.
In yesterday´s other matches for Group A, the DR beat 3-2 (17-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-21 and 16-14) Argentina, and Canada won 3-0 (25-22, 25-14 and 25-22) over Peru.
Meanwhile, in Pool B, Puerto Rico and United States defeated 3-0 (25-9, 25-13 and 25-13) Trinidad and Tobago and 3-0 (25-11, 25-18 and 25-19) Mexico, in that order.
The Dominicans, with three wins without loss, lead Pool A, followed by Argentina and Canada (2-1), Cuba and Peru (1-2) and Guatemala (0-3).
Americans (3-0) appear on top of Pool B ahead of Puerto Rico (2-0), Mexico (1-1), Colombia (0-2) and T&T (0-3).
The leaders of each group advance directly to semifinals, while the second and third best teams of each Pool qualify to quarterfinals.
The medalists of the previous edition, based in the DR, were USA (gold), the hosts (silver) and Canada (bronze).
Cuba finished in the seventh place, also surpassed by Brazil, Colombia and Puerto Rico.
