HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 21 (acn) Cuba and Argentina, defending champion, will fight next Saturday for the gold medal of the 14th Men's Pan American Volleyball Cup, based in the Mexican city of Colima.
Cubans defeated Chile 3-0 (25-20, 31-29 and 25-20) in semifinals and will face in the final Argentineans, who escort them in preliminary round Group A, and who beat 3-1 (25-17, 25-12, 25-27 and 25-22) Mexico in semis.
That previous match between Caribbeans and South Americans was a hard-fought game, since Cubans won 3-2 (32-30, 25-20, 22-25, 17-25 and 15-13).
Against Chileans, Osniel Melgarejo and Miguel Angel Lopez were Cuba´s leading scorers with 14 and 13 points respectively, while Vicente Parraguirre (12) and Dusan Bonacic (11) highlighted for the losing side.
Mexicans and Chileans will fight today for the bronze medal, while Americans and Puerto Ricans will face each other for the fifth place.
Canada and the Dominican Republic finished seventh and ninth, in that order, when beating yesterday Peru 3-2 (25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 21-25 and 17-15) and Guatemala 3-0 (25-20, 27-25 and 25-19), respectively.
Finally, Trinidad and Tobago ranked eleventh when overcoming 3-0 (25-12, 25-21 and 25-16) Suriname.
