HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 18 (acn) Cuba achieved its consecutive second victory in the 14th Men´s Pan American Volleyball Cup, which runs until June 21st in Colima, Mexico, and they will face Suriname today.
After defeating in their debut 3-2 (32-30, 25-20, 22-25, 17-25 and 15-13) Argentina, champion of the last two editions, Cubans now beat 3-0 (25-19, 25-20 and 25-19) Canada, in match of Group A.
Jesus Herrera was a key player in this second win by accumulating 12 points, and was supported by Osniel Melgarejo (10), while Danny Demyanenko (10) and Craig Ireland (9) excelled for the losing side.
In the other match in this group Argentina overcome 3-0 (25-10, 25-19 and 25-12) Suriname.
The Dominican Republic and Chile won 3-2 (36-38, 25-21, 25-19, 19-25 and 15-13) and 3-1(25-22, 19- 25, 25-22 and 25-19) over Guatemala and the United States, respectively, in Pool C.
Meanwhile, in Pool B, Puerto Rico and Mexico surpassed 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-18 and 25-15) and 3-1 (25-15, 28-26, 21-25 and 25-22) Trinidad and Tobago and Peru, in that order.
Cuba heads Group A with balance of two wins and no loss and 8 points, followed by Argentina (1-1 and 7 units), Canada (1-1; 5) and Suriname (0-2; 0).
Mexico (2-0; 9) and Puerto Rico (2-0; 7) appear on top of Pool B ahead of Peru (0-2; 3) and Trinidad & Tobago (0-2; 1); while Pool C is topped by Chile (2-0; 8), escorted by USA (1-1;6), the DR (1-1; 4) and Guatemala (0-2; 2).
Today´s program also includes the games Canada-Argentina (A), Peru-T&T and Mexico-Puerto Rico (B) and Guatemala-Chile and DR-USA (C).
The medalists of the previous edition in 2018 were Argentina (gold), Brazil (silver) and Cuba (bronze).
United States, with five gold and two silver, lead the historic medal table of the Men´s Pan American Volleyball Cups, followed by Brazil (3-1-0), Argentina (2-4-2), Cuba (2-0-3), Mexico (1-2-0), Canada (0-2-3), Puerto Rico (0-2-1), Dominican Republic (0-0-3) and Venezuela (0-0-1).
