Cuba reaches semifinals in Women´s U20 Pan American Volleyball CupHAVANA, Cuba, May 16 (acn) Cuba advanced directly and undefeated to the semifinal stage of the 2019 Women´s U20 Pan American Volleyball Cup, which takes place at the Manuel Bonilla Coliseum, in Lima, Peru.

The Caribbean team beat 3-0 (28-26, 25-20 and 25-19) Peru and thus amounted three victories without loss in group B, since they had previously achieved wins, both 3-0, over Guatemala (25-4, 25-11 and 25-10) and Honduras (25-4, 25-14 and 25-19), in that order.
Against Peruvians, the most outstanding Cuban player was Ailama Cese, top scorer of the match with 20 points, followed by Ivi May Vila, Thaila Moreno and Yaimaris Garcia, all with eight units each, while Kaira Montes (14) and Ariana Arciniega (10) highlighted for the losing side.
The other squad that reached the semifinalist directly and unbeaten was the Dominican Republic, who surpassed 3-0 (25-15, 25-11 and 25-22) Puerto Rico in Pool A.
Cubans and Dominicans will rest today awaiting for the winners of the quarterfinal matches to face them tomorrow, in search of a ticket to discuss the tournament title on Saturday.
In yesterday´s other game of Pool B, Honduras won 3-0 (25-18, 25-20 and 25-13) over Guatemala.
Today's quarter-final matches are Peru-Chile and Puerto Rico-Honduras.
This is the last qualifying event to the Women's U20 World Championship to be held next July in Mexico.
Peru and the DR, due to their current position in the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Ranking, are already qualified to that major feast, so the dispute for the solo ticket to the WC will be between Chile, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras and Puerto Rico.
In the previous edition of 2017, the medals went to the United States (gold), Argentina (silver) and Cuba (bronze).
The historic medal table of these tournaments, with editions in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017, has the DR as leader with one gold and two silver, followed by Peru, Mexico and USA (1-0-0), Argentina (0-2-0), Cuba (0-0-2) and Colombia and Chile (0-0-1) each.
