HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 25 (acn) Cuba will debut today with six athletes on the first day of the 2019 Pan American Judo Championships in Lima, Peru, to be attended by 215 judokas from 28 countries, in search of points for the continental and Olympic rankings.
According to the website of the tournament, the Cubans to debut today are the men Roberto Almenares (60 kg) and Orlando Polanco (66) and women Vanesa Godinez (48), Nahomis Acosta (52) and Anailis Dorvigne and Arnaes Odelin (57 kilos each).
The Caribbean island traveled to Lima with 17 judokas led by woman Idalis Ortiz (+ 78), Olympic and world monarch and current leader of the Olympic and continental ranking; and man Ivan Silva (90), universal runner-up in Baku 2018, who appears third and first in the planet and Pan-American lists, respectively.
The rest of the divisions of the individual contest will take place on Friday and Saturday, while the mixed team event will run on Sunday.
Cuba topped the previous edition of the continental judo championship, based in San Jose, Costa Rica, with five gold, three silver and four bronze medals, followed by Canada (3-1-3), Brazil (2-3-2), Ecuador (2-0-1), Argentina (1-2-0) and Colombia (1-0-1), the five countries that won the 14 titles.
