HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 22 (acn The former basketball player Ruperto Herrera will become next June the eleventh Cuban owner of the Olympic Order, highest distinction given by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Just a few days ago, the letter from Tomas Bach, head of IOC, confirming the agreement taken by the executive committee was received in Havana.
"I am happy, it is the highest recognition I have deserved after the bronze medal in Munich 1972 and being inducted to the FIBA Hall of Fame," Herrera, current Secretary General of the Cuban Olympic Committee, told JIT spots publication.
The award ceremony will take place from next June 24 to 26, during the 134th IOC General Assembly in Lausanne, Switzerland.
In the last hours, the legendary basketball player, then coach, manager and sports official, has received dozens of congratulations, including that of Pan Am Sports Organization (PASO) and FIBA.
Ten other Cubans who deserved the Olympic Order are Roberto Leon Richards, Jose Ramon Fernandez, Felix Savon, Teofilo Stevenson, Alberto Juantorena, Pedro Perez Dueñas, Rodrigo Alvarez Cambra, Raul Mazorra, Manuel Gonzalez Guerra and Reynaldo Gonzalez (the latter post mortem).
