HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 5 (acn) Cuban IM Carlos Albornoz will face today German IM Lev Yankelevich during the seventh round of the Accentus Young Masters 2019, running in the Swiss city of Bad Ragaz, where local GM Noel Studer appears as solo leader.
Not everything has gone well for the current Cuban senior champion on his first big contest in Europe, as despite remaining unbeaten, he achieves only one win and five draws, and even in two of them he was lucky, including the one reached on Monday with the host IM Oliver Kurmann in 72 moves of a Reti opening where he had a considerable disadvantage, but his rival lacked accuracy.
Albornoz, who is only 18, now amounts 3.5 points and appears fifth while Yankelevich ranks second with 4.5 units, including four wins.
Studer tops the standings with five points and his opponent today will be his compatriot FM Aurelio Colmenares, who ranks last with only one unit.
Russian GM Nikita Petrov is third, also with 4.5 units, and will face Kurmann today in a round that also includes the pairings between German IM Luis Engel against the local FM Theo Stijve, while Austrian IM Dominik Horvath will clash with German GM Dennis Wagner.
The Accentus Young Masters 2019 is a 10-player round-robin tournament taking place from February 27 to March 7.
