HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 1 (acn) Oscar Pino (130 kg) and Gabriel Rosillo (97) won gold medals in the 2019 Greco-Roman wrestling tournament Takhti Cup that took place last weekend in Tehran, the Iranian capital.
The two of them were the highlight of the Caribbean delegation that also earned a bronze medal through Javier Dumenigo (60), while Yosvany Peña (77) and Daniel Gregorich (87) were eliminated in their first bouts.
To climb to the top of the podium, Pino and Rosillo had to beat four local athletes each, while Dumenigo debuted with a 5-3 win over Azeri Murad Bazarov, but then lost 0-6 in semifinals to Iranian Mehrdad Mardani, champion of the division in the end, and in the bronze medal match he beat 8-2 Armenian Vazgen Khachatryan.
The remaining eight champions of the cup were locals and in addition to Pino and Rosillo, only another foreigner (Azeri Azad Aliyev) could reach the finals.
The contest involved 109 wrestlers from nine countries, and was dominated by Iran (240 points), Azerbaijan (134), Georgia (109) and Cuba (78).
