HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 30 (acn) Cuban Arlenis Sierra, captain of the Astana Women's Team, appears today in the tenth seat of the universal ranking of road cycling in the elite category of the International Cycling Union (UCI by its French acronym), after her spectacular start of the season in races in Australia.
Last Saturday, she won the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race but previously she had finished third in the Towards Zero Race Melbourne and in the first stage of the Santos Women Tour, all on the continent island.
With these successes, the Cuban rider amounts 1,098 points, thus climbing a spot and ousting Italian Marta Bastianelli of the top ten in the world ranking, which is headed by Dutch Anna Van Der Breggen with 1,912 units.
The Astana Women's Team also climbed four seats and ranks 14th among the UCI top-flight squads.
Cuba, with 1,523 units in the women´s event, also rose one position and appears eleventh, ahead of powers such as Spain (13) and UK (15).
Sierra´s next contest with her Kazakh-Italian club will be Le Samyn des Dames, next March 5, in Belgium.
The Astana Women's Team roster has 13 riders this year, including the 20-year-old also Cuban Heidy Praderas, who was also included in the 6-women squad who run in Australia.
