HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 11 (acn) Cuban Oniger Drake won the gold medal in the 88 kg division in the 2018 World Para Powerlifting Americas Open Championships held in Bogota, Colombia.
Drake, champion at the 2015 Parapan American Games in Toronto, Canada, lifted 207 kg to prevail over nine competitors during the closing day at the Sheraton hotel in the Colombian capital.
Brazilian Evanio Da Silva (206) and Indian Sachim Chaudhary (198) escorted Drake in the awards podium, in that order.
Cuban women Leidys Rodriguez (41 kg), also monarch in Toronto 2015, equaled her continental record with 85 kg, but the local Cristina Poblador lifted that same amount and earned the title by having lower body weight.
In this tournament also participated the Cuban man Yoander Arias (59), who failed his three attempts in a division won by Chilean Juan Carlos Garrido.
After this performance Cuba finished seventh in the standings, tied with Canada.
Brazil, with 26 athletes, topped the medal table with eight gold, eight silver and 10 bronze medals; ahead of Colombia (7-5-6) and Chile (5-2-1).
The 2018 World Para Powerlifting Americas Open Championships was attended by 155 athletes from 29 countries.
