HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 23 (acn) Despite suffering a bit more than expected, the Cuban men´s team earned a ticket to the table tennis event of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.
After losing in quarterfinals to the favorite squad of Brazil, they managed to beat Mexico at the Olympic Center of Santiago de Chile, where the 2018 Pan American Table Tennis Championships runs until next Sunday.
The Caribbean side, made up by Andy Pereira, Moises Campos and Livan Martinez, managed to defeat 3-1 the Aztecs, thus grabbing one of the six berths the tournament granted to Lima 2019.
The Cubans swept in the group stage with consecutive 3-0 wins over Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala, but their poor position in the world ranking sent them to face Brazil, subsequent champion of the event.
This was Cuba´s second ticket to Lima Pan-Am Games as the women´s team made up by Idalys Lovet, Lisy Castillo, Daniela Carrazana and Lizdainet Rodriguez, also qualify after ranking third behind Brazil and United States, the latter beat them in semifinals.
Today´s program of the 2018 Pan American Table Tennis Championships includes the men´s, women´s and mixed doubles events.
