HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 18 (acn) Cuba achieved its third consecutive win in the 4th Men´s U23 Pan American Volleyball Cup running until next Saturday in the Sports Dome of Mexico City.
The squad coached by Nicolas Vives beat the locals 3-0 (28-26, 25-17 and 25-16), according to the tournament website.
Previously, the Cubans had also defeated 3-0 (25-17, 25-14 and 25-13) Nicaragua and (25-19, 25-10 and 25-13) Peru, in that order, in a contest which grants points for the continental ranking ahead of the 2021 World Cup.
Miguel Lopez was the top scorer of the match with 14 points, supported by Osniel Melgarejo (11), and Joseé Masso and Roamy Alonso (10 each), while Diego Gonzalez (10) stood out for the losing side.
Today´s program includes the matches Mexico-Peru and Guatemala-Nicaragua, and Cuba will take its resting day.
In yesterday other game, Nicaragua beat 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 25-18, 24-26 and 15-10) Peru.
So far, Cuba leads the standings with three wins and no loss, followed by Guatemala (1-1), Mexico (1-1), Nicaragua (1-1) and Peru (0-3).
The 4th Men's U23 Pan American Volleyball Cup is a round-robin competition with the medals discussion on Saturday, when the third and fourth seats will fight for the bronze and the two best sides will face each other for title.
In the previous edition of 2016, based in Mexico, the medalists were Argentina (gold), Cuba (silver) and Chile (bronze), while in 2014, in Cuba, the locals got the crown, escorted by Mexicans and Dominicans, in that order, and in 2012, in Canada, the title went to Brazil, followed by Argentina and the DR, respectively.
Cuba and Argentina (1-1-0) head the historic medal table, ahead of Brazil (1-0-0), Mexico (0-1-0), Dominican Republic (0-0-2) and Chile (0-0-1).
