Cuba loses for the third straight time in Volleyball Women's World Championship

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 2 (acn) Cuba achieved its third loss in the 2018 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship when being beaten by Italy in a match for Pool B held at Hokkaido Prefectural Sports Center, Japan.

According to the official website of the contest, Italy won 3-0 (25-11, 25-18 and 25-20), thus achieving its second ever win against Cuba in World Championships, and its third win in this contest, while Cuba extended to 10 its match-losing streak, its longest without a win in the competition.
Italian Paola Egonu was the top scorer of the match with 15 points, with Anna Danesi contributing 11, including three blocks, while Ailama Cese and Jessica Aguilera both scored nine units for the losing side.
This was a good experience for us. We are still young and it was great to have a chance to play Italy. They won 3-0 but it was a good match for both teams, Tomas Fernandez, Cuban head coach, told the press.
In the other matches of this group, Turkey and China defeated both 3-0 Bulgaria and Canada, respectively.
Now the Pool is headed by Italy and China both with balance of three wins and no loss, followed by Turkey (2-1), Bulgaria (1-2) and Cuba and Canada (0-3 both).
The Netherlands (3-0) is the leader of Pool A escorted by Japan and Germany (2-1 both); USA and Russia appear as unbeaten leaders in three outings in Group C; while Serbia (3-0), Brazil (2-1) and Thailand (2-1) head the Pool D.
The top four teams from each pool will advance to the second round, which will feature two pools of eight sides each and the top three teams of each group will access the third stage in which two other squads will be eliminated, thus giving pass to the final four.
