HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 1 (acn) The Cuban squads attending the 43rd Chess Olympiad taking place in Batumi, Georgia, achieved again opposite results during the sixth round of this major tournament.
The men´s team, enrolled in the Open group, won 3.5-0.5 over Madagascar through wins by GMs Isan Ortiz (2527 Elo points), Omar Almeida (2540) and Yasser Quesada (2523) in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th boards, in that order, while GM Yuri Gonzalez (2566) drew in the first table.
Now, after six rounds, Azerbaijan and Poland share the top of the standings with 12 points and USA escort them with 11 units in a contest in which they defend the crown won two years ago, while Cuba appears 56 th with seven points.
Meanwhile, the Cuban women´s squad lost 1-3 Italy in a match in which only WIM Lisandra Llaudy (2294) could win in the third board as the rest of her teammates, IM Lisandra Ordaz (2415), WGM Yaniet Marrero (2281) and WIM Yerisbel Miranda (2239), all lost.
With eight units they now rank 25th in the standings in which Georgia 1, United States and Armenia appear as leaders with 11 points each.
Today, in the seventh round, Cuba will face Belgium in the Open Group while the women will rival Norway.
