HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 28 (acn) Cuba will participate with one pair of each sex in the 4th and penultimate stage of the 2018 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit that begins today in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, with the presence of 21 teams per sex from 16 countries.
Karell Peña and Luis Reyes join together for the first time, while the women´s duo is made up by Yanisleidis Sanchez and Arin Hechavarria.
This is the third consecutive year that this international resort hosts the tournament, in which Cubans Lianma Flores and Leila Martinez, and Canadians Julie Gordon and Sophie Bukovec won the previous women´s tournaments.
In the men's event the winners were Cubans Peña and Daisel Quesada, and Americans Miles Evans and William Kolinske, the latter are registered to defend their crown, as well as last year´s runners-up, Canadians Sergey Grabovsky and Fiodar Khazamiaka.
According to the official website of the contest, the men´s event will also be attended by the 2008 Olympic and 2007 world champion Phil Dalhausser, from United States, who will play along with Nick Lucena.
NORCECA also announced that, from October 4 to 8, the final stage of this Circuit will be held in Boca Chica, DR, with the presence of more than 15 countries and that, like the Punta Cana stage, will grant points to qualify to the Pan American Games of Lima 2019.
Cuban triple Olympic monarch Mireya Luis, FIVB and NORCECA vice president, has been appointed head of the organizing committee.
