Cuban Men´s Team swept in Chess Olympiad Third RoundHAVANA, Cuba, Sep 27 (acn) The Cuban men´ s team beat 4-0 Albania during the third round of the 43rd Chess Olympiad running in the Georgian city of Batumi, while the women´s side lost 0.5-3.5 to China.
According to the official website of the tournament, the wins of the Caribbean men went to GMs Yusnel Bacallao (2588 Elo points), Yuri Gonzalez (2566), Isan Ortiz (2527) and Omar Almeida (2540), with highlight to the first of them, who got his second victory of the contest in the first board.
After this result, they now amount five points and rank 23rd in the standings, and today they will face Moldova, who tied 2-2 Spain yesterday.
Meanwhile, the women´s squad had a very tough contender in China, defending champion, and only Lisadra Llaudy managed to score half a unit in the fourth board to avoid sweeping.
WIM Llaudy (2294) drew with GM Lei Tingjie (2468)in 39 moves of a Philidor Defense, bur her teammates IM Lisandra Ordaz (2415), WGM Yaniet Marrero (2281) and WGM Maritza Arribas (2243) all lost to GM Ju Wenjun (2561), current world monarch, IM Shen Yang (2464) and WGM Huang Qian (2446), in that order.
The Cuban women´s team now appears 48th with a total of four points and today will rival Iceland, who ranks 60th in a list so far headed by China and followed by Algeria, Mongolia, Georgia 1 and the United States, all tied with 6 points .
In the Open Group, 18 sides have achieved wins in their three outings but the standings are led by France, by having better tiebreaker than Israel, India and Iran.
