HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 31 (acn) Cuba got an important success when defeating the local side in the 13th Senior Men´s Pan American Volleyball Cup taking place in Veracruz, Mexico, tournament which grants five tickets to the Pan American Games of Lima 2019.
According to the website of the contest, Cubans won 3-2 (20-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-12 and 18-16) in two hours and one minute despite giving away 39 points to their victims by their own errors.
Miguel Angel Lopez was top scorer of the match with 26 units, supported by Miguel David Gutierrez (15), Osniel Melgarejo (14) and Raul Alonso (12), while Jorge Barajas (17) excelled for the locals.
With this result, Cuba topped group A with three wins without loss, but could not advance directly to semifinals as they were not better than Brazil and Argentina, leaders of Pooles B and C respectively.
Cubans will face Canada today in the quarterfinals and the winner will clash with Argentina in semifinals, while the best between Mexico and Puerto Rico will rival Brazil in the other semifinal match.
Argentina, Puerto Rico and Cuba, in that order, were the best teams of the previous event (2017).
The United States leads the historic medal table of these contests with five crowns, followed by Brazil (3), Cuba (2) and Mexico and Argentina (1 each).
