HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 31 (acn) Cuban light-welterweight Idalberto Umara won the gold medal in the 2018 AIBA Youth Women's & Men's World Boxing Championships based in Budapest, capital of Hungary.
The Cuban boxer beat 3-2 (29:28, 28:29, 29:28, 28:29, 30:27) Russian Ilya Popov in a revenge match of what happened in the Youth´s 4 Nations Match held this year with the European as host.
This was Umara´s fourth win in the contest and Cuba´s 76th scepter in the all-time medal table in such events.
The Caribbean island also earned a bronze medal through light-heavyweight Christian Pinder while middleweight Damian Acosta lost in his second outing.
Cuba could only register those three boxers due to the impossibility of getting visas in Havana to attend the Pan-American tournament held in the United States which awarded tickets to this major event.
Faced with this reality, the only alternative was to wait for the berths assigned by the organizers, who defined the divisions to be covered and only granted three inviting tickets to the Caribbean nation.
