Cuba beat Dominican Republic 85-52 in Centrobasket

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 22 (acn) Cuba debuted with an easy win over their Dominican Republic in the 2018 Centrobasket Women's Championship hosted in Manati, Puerto Rico.

Cubans won 85-52 (19-12, 18-14, 20-15 and 28-11), according to the official FIBA Americas website.
Yamara Amargo with 24 points was the offensive highlight for the winners, who almost assured the first place in group A and their subsequent advance to semifinals.

Other outstanding players of the winning side were Suchitel Avila with 17 units, Leidys Oquendo (14) and Anisleidys Galindo (13), while Yohanna Morton (18) highlighted for the DR.

In the previous match of this Poole, with only three teams, the DR easily defeated 82-29 Guatemala.
Group B includes the locals, Mexico, Costa Rica and the Bahamas and the first two of them appear as leaders with two wins each and today will define the order for tomorrow's semifinals.

The four squads reaching semifinals will earn tickets to the 2019 FIBA Women´s AmeriCup, which will in turn be a pre-Olympic tournament with view to Tokyo 2020.

Cuba amount 53 consecutive victories since the last time they lost in the edition of Monterrey 1991 when they were beaten twice by Mexico.

Since 1971 in the 21 versions held, Cuba has won 15 crowns and two silver medals, with a total of 91 wins and only three losses.
