Barranquilla: Cuba harvests 21 gold medals on ThursdayHAVANA, Cuba, Aug 3 (acn) Cuba ended up the penultimate day of the 23 rd Central American and Caribbean Games with a large harvest of 21 gold medals, result with which it exceeded 100 crowns.
The first two titles came early in the morning in boating through Fidel Vargas and Yurieni Guerra, winners of the K-1 200 meters men´s and women´s events, in that order.

The Cuban judokas climbed the top of the podium in the team events in both sexes, and they ranked first by countries in that sport with balance of eight gold, three silver and six bronze medals; followed by Venezuela (3-4-7) and the DR (3-3-6).
In men´s wrestling freestyle, Cuba won four titles yesterday thanks to Franklin Maren (74 kilos), Yurieski Torreblanca (86), Reineris Salas (97) and Yudenny Alpajon (125).
The pair Taymara Oropesa-Yeily Ortiz was crowned in the women´s doubles of the badminton tournament and Osleni Guerrero-Adriana Artiz earned the other first position in mixed doubles when beating their teammates Leodannis Martinez-Oropesa, while Guerrero-Martinez finished second in the men´s doubles and Oropesa and Guerrero did the same in the individual final events.
Another gold medal was achieved in fencing when the men´s foil team defeated Mexico 45-36 in the final, while the women's saber team was third by beating 45-42 Mexicans.
Meanwhile, lightweight Lazaro Alvarez, welter Roniel Iglesias, light heavyweight Julio Cesar La Cruz and super heavyweight Jose Angel Larduet conquered crowns and thus boxing had an overall amount of six gold and one silver medal.
In athletics, the world runner-up Lazaro Borges shared the top position with the local Walter Alejandro Viafara, because they both had identical jump (5.30 meters) in the men´s pole vault.
With personal best record of 17.34 meters, Cristian Napoles won the men´s triple jump followed by his compatriot Jordan Diaz (17.29).
On the other hand, the women´s and men´s 4x400m relays were crowned in their respective events with time of 3: 29.48 minutes - record for the competition - and 3: 03.87 minutes, in that order.
In team sports, the Cuban women's water polo side earned the gold medal by beating 12-5 Puerto Rico, while the men´s squad ranked second when losing 10-12 to the locals.
After two decades without winning at this level, the Cuban men's softball team came back to the top of the podium after defeating 4-3 the defending monarchs of Venezuela.
The triathlon mixed team, made up by Leslie Amat, Michel Gonzalez, Tania Rizo and Victor Herrera, finished third.
In archery, Maydenia Sarduy and Adrian Puentes were runners-up in the recurve mixed team, while Sarduy ranked third in the women´s individual event.
Finally, the men´s volleyball squad lost 2-3 to Mexico in the bronze medal match; and the men´s basketball team finished third when defeating 75-73 the Dominican Republic.
