Central American and Caribbean Games open in Colombia (+Photos)



HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 20 (acn) The 23rd Central American and Caribbean Games were inaugurated last night at Roberto Melendez Stadium, with a high-flying show that took a tour through the history and culture of the Colombian Atlantic region.
The opening ceremony, starring Paulina Vega, 2015 Miss Universe, included the usual protocol of the raising of flags, oaths of athletes, coaches and referees, official speeches, the parade of the delegations and the lighting of the cauldron.
Juan Manuel Santos, president of Colombia, said the opening speech and made use of emotional words during his last visit to Barranquilla in that condition where he mentioned local stars such former baseball player Edgar Renteria and singer Shakira in addition to praise the Caribbean city as venue of the happiest carnival worldwide.
Renteria was in charge of lighting the cauldron while Shakira enlivened the night through her marvelous performance.
Cuban three-time Olympic champion in wrestling Mijain Lopez was the flag bearer of the delegation, that is made up by 479 athletes.
