Cuban Jordan Diaz becomes U20 World champion in triple jump

Cuban Jordan Diaz becomes U20 World champion in triple jumpHAVANA, Cuba, Jul 15 (ACN) Cuban triple jumper Jordán Díaz won on Saturday the gold medal at the World Junior Athletics Championship in Tampere, Finland, underway until Sunday morning.

Díaz confirmed the predictions and won the gold medal with a 17.15 meter jump, which is a record for the event, although he could not reach his goal of breaking the world's 17.50 m youth record.

In the Ratina Stadium of that European city, the Havana-born athlete added another success to his young sporting career, in which he won the crown in the universal competition of the cadet category, held in Nairobi, Kenya, last year.

There he impressed with his 17.30 meter world record for the category, and although he is now below that record, no one doubts his excellent conditions to reign at the highest level in the triple jump.

The sequence of the Cuban this Saturday was 16.84 meters-16.91-17.15-foul-17.15, which shows that with any of his valid marks he would have conquered the title.

In that event, he was escorted on the podium by the Frenchman Martin Lamou (16.66) and Jonathan Seremes (16.18), as the silver and bronze medalists, respectively, according to the official website of the International Federation of this sport.

With this result, Díaz also maintained the golden tradition of this modality, becoming today the sixth Cuban triple jumper to win the title in a World Youth Athletics Championship.

Also on Saturday, the Caribbean nation added a bronze metal through Yaritza Martinez in the throwing of the hammer, and now rose to 11th place in the medal standings with a gold, a silver and two third places.
