Cuban discus thrower to finals in IAAF World U20HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 12 (acn) Cuban Silinda Morales will try today to climb to the podium in the women´s discus throw event of the IAAF World U20 Championships running in Tampere, Finland, until next July 15.
Morales, gold medalist last year in the U18 universal contest with stage in Nairobi, Kenya, reached the final of that event with record of 54.05 meters, third best in the qualifying phase.
The Cuban athlete will have several tough rivals, including Moldova´s Alexandra Emelianova, who won the qualifying round with 57.05 m and she also owns the world season best with 60.24 m.
The group of 12 finalists also includes Dutch Jorinde Van Klinken (59.02) and Croatian Marija Tolj (57.90), according to the IAAF official site.
Three other Cuban representatives will also compete today, those are the cases of women Amanda Almendariz and Yaritza Martinez (hammer throw), as well as heptathlonist Adriana Rodriguez.
So far, the Cuban delegation amounts one silver medal in this athletics world championship won yesterday by Maikel Vidal in the men´s long jump event.
