Cuban Diaz receives award from Badminton World FederationHAVANA, Cuba, May 23 (acn) Cuban Miguel Diaz received the Distinguished Service Award from the Badminton World Federation (BWF) during its annual general meeting held in Bangkok, Thailand, also home to the 2018 Thomas & Uber Cup Finals.

The BWF, which is made up of 189 members, honored Diaz in an emotional ceremony by his outstanding contribution to the development of badminton, both nationally and internationally, said the Cuban embassy in that Asian nation in a press release.
The event was attended by Paul-Erik Hoyer, BWF president; Mrs. Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, president of the local Badminton Federation and member of the International Olympic Committee; other senior BWF officials; Alexis Ramirez, president of the Cuban Badminton Federation (CBF) and Cuba's ambassador to Thailand, Hector Conde.
Diaz was the cornerstone in the creation on November 21, 1979 of the CBF, institution that he presided until October 2017.
He held high international responsibilities as vice president of the Pan-American Badminton Confederation and holder of the Central America and Caribbean Badminton Confederation. Prior to that, he created in 2000 the "Giraldilla de La Habana" annual international tournament and currently maintains his notorious contribution with the CBF and the INDER.
