Foreigners become Champions in Havana´s Capablanca Memorial Chess Championship

HAVANA, Cuba, May 21 (acn) The two groups of the 53rd Capablanca Memorial Chess Championship, held in Havana, were won by foreign contestants.

The Elite Group was won by American Samuel Shankland with 7.5 points from possible 10, after beating in the final round Cuban Yusnel Bacallao in 32 moves of a Slav defense.
The veteran Russian Aleksey Dreev ranked second with six units after drawing with Spanish David Anton in 39 plays of a Cambridge Springs defense.
The latter finished third with amount of 5.5 points, one and a half more than Russian Aleksandr Rakhmanov, who also drew with local Lazaro Bruzon in 41 movements of an English opening.
The positions five and six went to Bacallao and Bruzon, with only 3.5 units and without achieving wins each.
Meanwhile, the champion of the Open group was Peruvian Cristian Cruz (7.5), escorted by locals Lelys Martinez and Camilo Gomez, in that order, both with the same amount of the winner but with worst tiebreaker.
