HAVANA, Cuba, May 9 (acn) Undefeated in two outings, Cuba will face Puerto Rico today in a crucial match for the 2018 CONCACAF Women´s Championship qualification, Caribbean Zone, based in the Dominican Republic.
Jesus Pereira, head of the Cuban women's soccer project, told ACN that the national squad only needs a draw to head the group, since in the last game they must beat the weak team of Anguilla, next Sunday.
The Cuban side debuted with a 5-1 victory over the locals with two goals by striker Rachel Pelaez and one each by Maria Perez, Lilian Perez and Maristania Mengana.
In their second match, they scandalously thrashed 11-0 Aruba, with a hat-trick by Maria Perez, a double by Dianelis Carbonell, and single goals by Maristania Mengana, Yiliany Sablon, Ollancy Arrebato, Karelia Fuentes, Sucel Maceo and Zailin Rodriguez.
Cuba appears first in Group A with 6 points, followed by Puerto Rico (4), as they drew 0-0 with the DR in their second game.
The result of today´s match should decide the first place of the group, which will get the only ticket to the Caribbean final round, in place yet to be defined, from August 25 to September 2, among the five first-round group winners.
The best-three in that second round advance to the final tournament, to be held in United States, from next October 4 – 17, which grants three tickets to the 2019 FIFA Women´s World Cup.
