HAVANA, Cuba, May 7 (acn) Cubans Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez won the bronze medal in the three-star stop of the 2018 Beach Volleyball World Tour that took place in Mersin, Turkey.
According to the official website of the contest, Diaz and Gonzalez beat 2-0 (21-14 and 21-15) the Swiss couple of Adrian Heidrich and Mirco Gerson.
The Cuban pair lost in semifinals 0-2 (20-22 and 18-21) to Czechs Perusic - Schweiner, who finished as runners-up after losing 1-2 (21-14, 12-21 and 16-18) in the final to Russians Leshukov - Semenov.
Diaz and Gonzalez had an overall balance of five wins and two losses, as they lost in their debut against a Serbian duo, to then achieve four wins in a row over duets from Finland, Latvia, Qatar and Belarus.
The Caribbean couple, fifth at Rio 2016 Olympics, rejoined the world tour after ranking 25th in the 4-star stop of Xiamen, China, with balance of two wins and two losses.
After the Chinese tournament, Diaz and Gonzalez finished second in the third stop of the NORCECA circuit held in Varadero Beach, Cuba.
Their main goal this year is the Barranquilla Central American and Caribbean Games, from July 19 – August 3, where they will defend the crown they won in the previous edition of Veracruz 2014.
Prior to that major competition, they will also attend the World Tour stops of Luzern, Switzerland; Itapema, Brazil; Ostrava, Czech Republic; Warsaw, Poland and Esphino, Portugal.
