HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 10 (acn) Thanks to another pitching jewel by right-hander Lazaro Blanco, Granma beat 3-1 Matanzas, thus taking a very important step towards the final playoff of the 57th Cuban National Baseball Series.
The current champion now commands this semifinal series 3-1, so it appears only one win shy to reach the grand final.
Blanco earned the win after covering the entire route allowing one earned run with four hits, seven strikeouts and two walks.
The loss went to Yosvani Torres, who was a worthy rival as in 7.2 innings he surrendered three runs with only six hits to Granma´s powerful line-up.
Matanzas´ RF Ariel Sanchez was the only player to bat 2 hits in the game although Granma´s 3B Raul Gonzalez managed to drive in two runs without batting a single hit.
The fifth and probably final match of the series will be held today and Granma´s starting pitcher could be left-hander Ulfrido García, while the also lefty Yoanni Yera, author of Matanzas´s only win in this playoff, should be his opponent.
