Cuban Sports Highlighted in 2017HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 29 (acn) The President of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER), Antonio Becali highlighted on Friday in Havana the country's achievements in the sector.

During a meeting with the press in the Finca La Trinidad, Becali summarized the year highlighting the performance of Cuban athletes in different world championships conquering five Gold medals 6 Silver and 7 Bronze.

He mentioned the work of the Cuban representatives in the World Boxing event in Hamburg, Germany where seven boxers went to the finals and five obtained medals.

Other outstanding sports achievements in 2017 were canoeing with two Silver medals, rowing with Silver, Wrestling with three Bronze and volleyball.

Regarding volleyball, the INDER representative highlighted the medals obtained by the men's team in the World Championship in the under 21 and under 23 categories placing the team in second and third places, respectively.

In another moment of his speech, he confirmed that Cuba has 368 athletes that have qualified for the Central American and Caribbean Games scheduled in 2018 in Barranquilla, although they aspire to have a delegation of 500 to the regional games.

Becali also explained that the main objective was achieved this year in promoting physical education and sports in search of a better quality of life for the population through recreation and practicing traditional games, in the cities and mountains areas.

Lastly, he stressed how the country has advanced in the recovery of the sports installations, many of them concluded with good quality like the Baragua Pool Complex, the National Sailing School and the Gymnasium for the pre selection members of Cuban athletics.
