Cuban GM Bacallao finished second in Mexican chess tournament

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 20 (acn) Cuban Yusnel Bacallao finished second at the Carlos Torre Repetto Chess Memorial Tournament, held in Merida, Mexico, where Peruvian Emilio Cordova was crowned with half a point of advantage.

In the final round, Cordova signed peace with Cuban Yuri Gonzalez and reached 7.5 points, an amount unattainable for the rest of competitors, including Bacallao who also drew with his compatriot Lazaro Bruzon.
Thus, Bacallao totaled seven units and Bruzon amounted half point less and ranked fourth without being able to repeat the title he won a year ago.
Gonzalez also totaled 6.5 units, but had better tiebreaker than Bruzon, thus finishing third.
The also Cubans Ermes Espinosa, Henry Soto and Isan Ortiz, all with 6.5 points, appeared 6th, 8th and 9th by tiebreaker, in that order.
The national champion Yenisbel Miranda achieved 5.5 points to become the best ranked woman and appeared 29th among the 121 contestants.
