HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 15 (acn) Cuba will attend the 2017 World Boxing Championships to run from next August 25 to September 2nd in Hamburg, Germany.
The Caribbean island is the current champion of this event as they won the previous edition held two years ago in Doha, Qatar when reaching four crowns.
The Cuban leadership started in Havana-1974 and in Doha-2015 they earned their 10th tournament by countries in 17 appearances as they didn´t attend the edition of Chicago-2007.
Cuba will attend this contest with five of its six Olympic medalists, including the 2015 monarchs Joahnys Argilagos (49 kg), Lazaro Alvarez (60), Arlen Lopez (75) and Julio César La Cruz (81). Roniel Iglesias (69), Milan 2009 world champion, is the other Cuban universal king.
Alvarez and La Cruz will have the additional incentive of achieving a fourth global scepter, merit only owned by Juan Hernandez Sierra, second in the Cuban ranking which is led by the great Felix Savon with six.
This is expected to be a hard-fought competition in which Azeris, Uzbeks and Russians appear to be Cuba´s main rivals.
Just a month ago, the Caribbean island lost 5-6 to Kazakhstan in the final of the 7th World Series of Boxing (WSB), but Rolando Acebal, Cuban head coach, told ACN they have already made the necessary arrangements to retain the crown.
