HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 11 (acn) Cuban discus throwers Denia Caballero and Yaime Perez qualified on Friday to the finals of the modality and will go for medals on Sunday during the final day of the World Athletics Championship in London.
Perez, who finished in 4th placed two years ago in Beijing 2015, obtained the second best throw in the qualifying round with a mark of 65.58 meters; behind the Olympic Silver medalist Croatian Sandra Perkovic (69.67).
Denia Caballero, World Champ two years ago, launched the discuss 63.79 meters placing her in 5th place among the 12 finalists.
Others that also qualified were Australian Dani Stevens with 65.56, French Melina Robert-Michon 63.97 and German Nadine Muller 63.35.
Related with Cuban athletes, Perez is the owner of the 4th best discuss throw with 69.19 meters obtained last July in Soteville, France where the Gold Medal went to Perkovic.
Previously, Perez had obtained a better throw than the Croatian athlete during the Diamond League in Stockholm, Sweden last June 18th throwing the discuss 67.92 meters.
Perez has demonstrated that she can achieve a Gold Medal although the European champ is among the favorite for the World title with outstanding marks this year of 71.41, 70.23, 69.67 and 69.58 meters.
Caballero, meanwhile will attempt to maintain her throne, although she must improve the 67.04 meters as personnel mark this season.
