HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 4 (acn) Led by pole vaulter Yarisley Silva, Beijing 2015 world champion, a trio of Cubans will compete today in the opening of the World Athletics Championships 2017, based in London, England, until August 13.
Silva, runner-up at London 2012 Olympic Games and indoor universal monarch in Sopot, Poland, three years ago, has as season best 4.81 meters, record she achieved on June 15, in Oslo, Norway, result which places her in the third seat of the world ranking this year.
She won the gold medal in that stop of the Diamond League, where she had previously earned a third seat in Doha, Qatar, last May, with 4.65 meters, while she was silver medalist in Rome, Italy, with 4.75m.
The women´s pole vault event of this major contest will be attended by 31 competitors who need to jump over 4.60 meters to advance to the final.
Young Cubans Maykel Massó and Juan Miguel Echevarria will also compete today in the men´s long jump qualifying event, according to IAAF official website.
Massó, with record of 8.33 m, appears 4th in the world ranking this season and is a serious contender to the awards podium, while Echevarria (8.28) also aspires to reach the final.
