HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 14 (acn) Cuba momentaneously climbed to the first seat of the standings in the IAAF World U18 Championships after the tremendous performance by Jordan Diaz, who won the gold medal in the men´s triple jump event.
According to IAAF official website, Diaz even set a world U18 record when reaching 17.30 meters, which is in addition the 7th season best jump at any level.
He was escorted in the awards podium by Ecuadorian Frixon Chila (15.92) and Colombia´s Arnovis Dalmero (15.89), while the also Cuban Yusniel Jorrin (15.88) finished fourth.
The previous WU18R (17.24) was set by the also Cuban Lazaro Martinez and dates back from February 2014.
Now Cuba heads the standings with 2 gold and 1 silver medals, followed by Germany (2-0-2), South Africa (1-2-1), China (1-1-2) and Ethiopia (1-0-1).
The Caribbean island should improve this performance as Silinda Morales and Melany Matheus compete precisely today in the women´s discus throw final and they both are among the favorites.
Morales owns the season best with 53.21 meters, while Matheus (52.22) ranks third in that list, behind China´s Yuanyuan Yin (52.41).
