HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 12 (acn) Cuba will be represented today by four competitors in the opening of the IAAF World U18 Championship based in Nairobi, Kenya, until July 16, contest in which it has options to win more than one medal.
The Cuban athletes debuting today in the tenth edition of this tournament are triple jumpers Jordan Diaz and Yusniel Jorrin, owners of the two season best records worldwide.
Diaz reached 16.66 meters this year, while Jorrin (16.02) appears second in the ranking, reason why they are the main candidates to climb to the awards podium.
Also today, the Caribbean island will compete on the women´s discus throw event through Silinda Morales and Melany Matheus, and they both are serious contenders for medals as Morales owns the season best with 53.21 m and Matheus (52.22) ranks third, while Chinese Yuanyuan Yin (52.41) appears second.
Two years ago, in Cali, Colombia, Cuba ranked ninth in the standings with two gold and two bronze medals.
In that tournament, long jumper Maykel Masso and triple jumper Cristian Napoles won the titles; while the bronze medalists were triple jumpers Yanna Armenteros (woman) and Julio César Carbonell.
