HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 5 (acn) Cuba lost their unbeaten status at the international baseball tournament in Rotterdam when losing 1-6 to the host and favorite squad in their fourth outing.
The team managed by Vladimir Hernandez opened the score in the very first frame against Lars Huijer through an RBI-single by cleanup hitter and DH Osvaldo Vazquez.
Huijer took the win after surrendering only one run with 6 hits and 5 strikeouts in seven innings.
Outfielders Edilse Silva and Yoelkis Guibert were Cuba´s best batters when hitting 2 for 3, while Vazquez made it 2 for 4. The other Cuban hit, which only batted seven, went to Yusniel Ibáñez.
Meanwhile, lefty Dariel Gongora took the loss after allowing five runs, with nine hits and two walks in six innings.
Catcher Gianison Boekhoudt offensively highlighted for the locals by hitting 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
In their previous three games in this tournament, Cubans beat Curacao (3-2), Japan (8-4) and Chinese Taipei (7-6). Today will be a resting day and the semifinals will start on Thursday.
